MaryLynn Lodor, General Manager of Miami Conservancy District, emphasized the importance of these consultations, stating, "We understand the significance regarding flood protection assessments for property owners. These individual consultations offer a tailored approach to address specific concerns and ensure transparency in the assessment process."
The readjustment of the appraisal of benefits, conducted in compliance with state law, considers various factors such as property values, historical flooding data, and the extent of flood protection provided. This meticulous process aims to maintain an equitable distribution of costs associated with maintaining and enhancing the flood protection system throughout the five protected counties and 22 cities that receive flood protection benefits from the Miami Conservancy District.
In the City of Hamilton, there are 5,098 properties protected by the Miami Conservancy District that pay an individual assessment. Approximately 80% of those properties are anticipated to have an assessment that is less than $250 per year for both the maintenance and capital assessment.
The assessments are based on an approved methodology. The rate is established by the Miami Conservancy District Board of Directors.
