MCD Announces $8.7 Million in Federal Funding for Three Dam Rehabilitation Projects

The Miami Conservancy District announced $8.685 million in federal funding secured by Congressman Mike Turner to help rehabilitate upstream concrete walls at Germantown, Englewood, and Taylorsville dams.

Turner joined MCD for the October 20 announcement. The funding supports major improvements to three structures within the regional flood protection system that has served southwest Ohio for more than a century.

The project is identified in federal funding records as the Germantown, Englewood, Taylorsville Upstream Dam Walls Rehabilitation project, through FEMA’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation funding account.

Strengthening the Structures That Protect Our Communities

The work will address deteriorated concrete and structural stability concerns in the upstream walls at the three dams. Rehabilitation will help improve their long-term performance and bring the repaired structures into alignment with current engineering standards.

These concrete structures are exposed to weather and the forces of moving and stored water. Repairing them is part of maintaining the flood protection system throughout its service life.

Part of a Larger Investment in Flood Protection

The three projects are part of MCD’s broader capital improvement planning. Inspections, monitoring, and engineering analysis help identify needed repairs and establish priorities across the dams, levees, floodwalls, and other flood protection infrastructure.

Federal support helps MCD carry out major rehabilitation while reducing the amount that must be funded locally. Continued local investment remains necessary for daily operations, maintenance, and other capital needs throughout the system.

Germantown, Englewood, and Taylorsville are three of MCD’s five dry dams. Together with upstream storage basins, levees, floodwalls, and improved river channels, they form an integrated system that reduces river flood risk for communities across southwest Ohio.
