All 5 MCD dams store water on anniversary of Great Flood

The MCD flood protection system experienced its second high water event of 2023 this weekend. Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms dropped 0.75 to 2.25 inches of rain in the Miami Valley during the overnight hours on March 23 and 24 and another 1.00 to 2.00 inches of rain on March 24 and 25. Runoff from the rainfall resulted in storage events at all five MCD flood protection dams. MCD staff closed floodgates in Troy, Middletown, and Hamilton. As of Sunday evening the high water event was still in progress with Englewood Dam still in storage and river levels at several MCD flood protection features still above first action stage. Peak water storage for this event was 15,790 acre-feet or about 5.1 billion gallons of water. The event ranks 126th on the MCD list of largest storage events.
